Dave Earley's book "The 21 Most Effective Prayers of the Bible" examines powerful prayers from Scripture that produced results.
Chapter 4 focuses on the prayer of Gideon in the book of Judges 6:17, when he specifically tells God, “Give me a sign.”
Gideon, a humble and cautious man, feels inadequate when God calls him to deliver Israel from the Midianites. Despite his doubts, Gideon prays for confirmation, asking for a sign to ensure that he is truly following God’s will. This prayer reveals Gideon’s desire to obey God but also highlights his struggle with fear and uncertainty.
In response, God does not rebuke Gideon’s lack of confidence. Instead, He patiently grants Gideon a sign by performing miracles with a fleece of wool. First, Gideon asks that the fleece be wet with dew while the ground remains dry. When God grants this request, Gideon, still unsure, prays for another sign, asking this time that the fleece stay dry while the ground is covered in dew. God again complies, further reassuring Gideon of His presence and support.
Earley uses Gideon’s prayer to demonstrate the importance of seeking God’s guidance, especially when feeling inadequate or fearful. Gideon’s story reminds readers that it’s normal to struggle with self-doubt, yet God is compassionate and willing to provide assurance when asked in faith. The author encourages believers to approach God with honesty, expressing their needs and doubts, as Gideon did, knowing that God is patient and understanding.
Gideon’s prayer emphasizes trust and dependence on God. Earley concludes that true effectiveness in prayer is not about eloquence or confidence but about a sincere heart that seeks God’s direction and confirmation, especially in times of doubt.
